International Action Center Condemns U.S. gunboat diplomacy in Haiti

STOP THE U.S. OCCUPATION OF HAITI! RESTORE PRESIDENT ARISTIDE! EMERGENCY DEMONSTRATIONS PLANNED NATIONWIDE [in French]

The International Action Center condemns the forcible overthrow of the government of Haiti and the removal of popularly elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide by the U.S. and French military. We demand that President Aristide be allowed to return and that the U.S. withdraw its occupation troops, agents and terrorist mercenary forces from Haiti's soil.

The departure of President Aristide was far from a voluntary decision for the "good of the country," as George Bush's mouthpiece in Haiti, Ambassador James Foley, maintains. No one in the Bush regime cares about what’s good for Haiti. If they did, they would not have tortured the Haitian people with years of economic sanctions. They would not have armed and paid the mercenary death squads that are terrorizing northern Haiti, murdering political opponents and threatening to turn Port-au-Prince into a killing field.

President Aristide left Haiti under the guns of a U.S. Naval task force and thousands of U.S. Marines, with Marine helicopters hovering over the presidential palace and U.S.-armed mercenaries surrounding the capital. Haiti's capital is now under U.S. military occupation.

With conflicting reports coming out of Haiti, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the President was kidnapped. The corporate-owned U.S. news media have been dishonest in the reporting of events, claiming the revolt against President Aristide was a spontaneous uprising, in the midst of which hundreds of heavily armed, well-trained commandos just happened to materialize.

The U.S. government has a long and bloody history of overthrowing popular governments in Latin America and the Caribbean. It has used both CIA covert operations and direct invasions. To name just a few - Guatemala in 1954, Jamaica in the 1970s, Chile in 1973 and Nicaragua in 1992, Grenada in 1983 and Panama in 1989. U.S. troops marched into Haiti in 1888, 1898, 1891 and occupied Haiti directly from 1914 to 1934. The objective has always been the same: to keep the wealth of Latin America and the Caribbean flowing into the vaults of Wall Street banks while the people who produce it remain poor.

In 1914 the U.S. Marine Corps seized all of Haiti's gold reserves and carted them off to the United States. Both France and the U.S. owe Haiti reparations. The leader of the resistance to the 1915 invasion, Charlemagne Peralte, was murdered by U.S. troops, tied to a door almost fully naked and put on display. U.S. Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler later confessed, "I made Haiti a safe place for the First National City Bank boys to collect revenues in."

The forced removal of President Aristide, who tried to resist some of the dictates of the International Monetary Fund, marks a blatant return to that era of open colonialism and gunboat diplomacy. The banker-politicians and generals in Washington would like to restore that regime not only in Haiti but also throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Haiti is their testing ground. They must be stopped!

Today we call on freedom-loving people everywhere to rally to the cause of the Haitian people and their elected government.

No to U.S. occupation! No to mercenary death squads! Restore the elected government of Haiti! U.S. and France, hands off! Reparations for Haiti!

L'International Action Center condamne la diplomatie de la canonnière en Haïti

ARRÊTEZ L'OCCUPATION US D'HAÏTI ! RETOUR DU PRÉSIDENT ARISTIDE ! MANIFESTATIONS D'URGENCE EN PRÉPARATION DANS TOUT LE PAYS

L'International Action Center condamne le renversement par la force du gouvernement d'Haïti et l'enlèvement du président élu par le peuple Jean-Bertrand Aristide par les militaires étatsuniens et français. Nous exigeons que l'on laisse le président Aristide retourner au pouvoir et que les Etats-Unis retirent leurs troupes d'occupation, leurs agents et leurs forces mercenaires terroristes du sol haïtien.

Le départ du président Aristide est loin d'être une décision personnelle pour le "bien du pays", comme le maintient le porte-parole de George Bush en Haïti, l'ambassadeur James Foley. Personne, dans le régime Bush, ne ce soucie de ce qui est bon pour Haïti. Si c'était le cas, ils n'auraient pas torturé les Haïtiens avec des années de sanctions économiques. Ils n'auraient pas armés et payés les escadrons de la mort qui terrorisent le nord d'Haïti, assassinent les opposants politiques et menacent de faire une tuerie à Port-au-Prince. Le président Aristide quitta Haïti devant les canons d'une force d'invasion navale étatsunienne et de milliers de marines US, avec des hélicoptères des marines survolant le palais présidentiel et des mercenaires armés par les Etats-Unis encerclant la capitale. La capitale d'Haïti est maintenant sous occupation militaire US.

Malgré les informations contradictoires qui proviennent d'Haïti, il apparaît de plus en plus clairement que le Président a été kidnappé. Les médias capitalistes étatsuniens sont malhonnêtes dans le compte-rendu des événements, prétendant que la révolte contre Aristide était un soulèvement spontané dans lequel des centaines de commandos lourdement armés et bien entraînés seraient simplement apparus.

Le gouvernement étatsunien a une longue et sanglante histoire de renversements de gouvernements populaires en Amérique latine et aux Caraïbes. Pour cela, il a utilisé, à la fois, des opérations secrètes de la CIA et des invasions directes. Pour ne citer que quelques-unes : au Guatemala en 1954, en Jamaïque dans les années 70, au Chili en 1973, au Nicaragua en 1990, à Grenade en 1983 et à Panama en 1989. Les troupes US ont envahi Haïti en 1888, 1898, 1891 et occupèrent Haïti directement de 1915 à 1934. Ils tentèrent et manquèrent plusieurs fois à Cuba depuis 1959. Le but a toujours été le même : que les richesses de l'Amérique latine et des Caraïbes continuent à entrer dans les coffres des banques de Wall Street pendant que les peuples qui les produisent restent pauvres.

En 1915, les Marines US saisissèrent toutes les réserves d'or d'Haïti et les emmenèrent aux Etats-Unis. La France et les Etats-Unis doivent à Haïti des réparations. Le chef de la résistance à l'invasion en 1915, Charlemagne Peralte, fut assassiné par les troupes étatsuniennes, attaché à une porte presque totalement nu et livré aux regards. Le général-major des marines Smedley Butler avoua plus tard : "J'ai fait d'Haïti un endroit sûr pour que les types de la National City Bank puissent y faire du profit". L'enlèvement forcé du président Aristide qui essaya de résister à certaines exigences du Fonds monétaire international, marque un retour flagrant à l'époque du colonialisme déclaré et de la diplomatie de la canonnière. Les politiciens-banquiers à Washington voudraient restaurer ce régime non seulement à Haïti mais également partout en Amérique latine et aux Caraïbes. Haïti est leur coup d'essai. Ils doivent être stoppés !

Aujourd'hui nous appelons les personnes aimant la liberté de se rallier à la cause du peuple haïtien et de son gouvernement élu.

Non à l'occupation US ! Non aux escadrons mercenaires ! Restaurez le gouvernement élu d'Haïti ! Les Etats-Unis et la France : ne touchez pas à Haïti ! Réparations pour Haïti !
