Elections in Haiti -- meeting Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000 at the IAC
While we are all waiting for the count in Florida to be certified, so we know who will be the "next president of the United States," there is a major struggle over elections in Haiti that is brewing.
The Haiti Support Network (HSN) is presenting a forum tomorrow night, Thursday, Nov. 9 entitled "From Philly to Haiti! The struggle for sovereignty!"
This meeting is going to try to connect the growing police brutality and violence against the African American communities in the US and the pressure and threats of military occupation and attack against poor countries like Haiti, that has to face massed troops, led by US Special Forces, on its border with the Dominican Republic.
Thousands of Haitians who work in the DR have been rounded up and expelled bck to unemployment in Haiti.
The U.S. has discredited the presidential election in Haiti, which is expected to see Jean-Bertrand Arristide win, as undemocraticand is working to derail them.
Maud Leblanc, co-director of Haiti Progres, has just returned fromHaiti, will talk on the struggle there; Ray Laforest of HSN will talk on conditions in the Haitian and immigrant community here; Pam Africa, coordinator of the International Concerned Family and Friedn of Mumia Abu-Jamal will make the connection between Haiti and Philly.
HSN will ask for a $3 contribution to come in, but certainly no one will be urned away for lack of funds. For more information, please call 212-633-6646.
