Demonstrate to demand the return of Elian Gonzalez to Cuba

DEMONSTRATION DECEMBER 18 AT TORRICELLI’S HOME WILL DEMAND THE IMMEDIATE RETURN OF ELIAN GONZALEZ TO HIS FATHER IN CUBA

The New Jersey Emergency Committee to Return Elian Gonzalez to his father in Cuba has called for a demonstration and march to be held in Englewood, NJ at 1 pm on Saturday, December 18, 1999.

The group will meet at the Monument (Palisade Ave. and Tenafly Rd.) at 1 pm and proceed along Palisade Ave. to the home of Senator Robert G. Torricelli (D- NJ) at 161 Walnut Street.

Legal experts and human rights activists have described the detention of 6-year- old Elian, against the wishes of his father in Cuba, as a violation of U.S. law, Cuban law and international laws. The U.S. Government’s decision to hold the boy is in violation of the U.S. Cuba Migratory Act of 1995. The traumatized child’s cruel exploitation by the right-wing Cuban National American Foundation, is an affront to common decency.

Senator Torricelli has again joined his fanatical right-wing Cuban friends and financiers in their political extremism. He has traveled to Miami to demand that Elian be kept in the U.S., absurdly claiming that the return of the boy to his natural father would be nothing but "a gift to Fidel Castro." In this holiday season, Torricelli has demonstrated a new level of vindictiveness towards the people of Cuba and a total disregard for family values. Toys and material goods are no substitute for a loving father, grandparents and community. We will march to Torricelli’s house to tell him that we want Elian home for Christmas.
